Holiday Cottages in Cornwall

There's a reason holiday cottages in Cornwall fill up faster than almost anywhere else in England. It's not just the beaches — though those help. It's the whole thing: the light, the coast path, the fact that even in January you can sit outside in Penzance in a t-shirt if the sun's out.

With over 850 self-catering properties spread across the county, Cornwall has options for every kind of trip. A four-bedroom farmhouse near Padstow for a big family group. A converted fisherman's cottage in Portscatho for two. A dog-friendly place with a hot tub within earshot of the sea. It's all here.

What actually sets Cornwall apart from Devon or Dorset is how different each corner feels. North coast Cornwall — Newquay, Bude, Polzeath — is Atlantic-facing, surfy, wind-battered in a good way. The south coast is altogether calmer: the Helford River, the Roseland Peninsula, Fowey harbour. Two completely different holidays, same county.

Which Cornwall beaches allow dogs year-round?

Porthtowan, Holywell Bay, Sennen Cove, Whitesand Bay, and Polzeath all allow dogs throughout the year. The busier summer beaches — Fistral in Newquay, Porthmeor in St Ives — restrict dogs between May and September. Worth checking with the relevant local council before you travel, as the rules occasionally shift.

How far in advance should I book a summer cottage in Cornwall?

For peak July and August in the popular spots — St Ives, Padstow, Rock — you're looking at 6–12 months, sometimes more. June and September are more forgiving, usually 2–3 months' notice is fine. If your dates are flexible, last-minute deals do come up, especially for midweek stays.

Are there hot tub cottages in Cornwall near the sea?

Yes — over 100 Cornwall cottages have a private hot tub, and a fair number have coastal or sea views. It's become one of the most searched-for features in Cornwall, particularly for winter and early spring breaks when the weather is dramatic and the crowds are long gone.

What is the best area in Cornwall for a couples' cottage holiday?

Rock, Fowey, and the Roseland Peninsula tend to come out on top for couples wanting something quieter. Rock has good food and sailing and is accessed from Padstow by a short foot ferry. Fowey is genuinely beautiful and less well-known than it should be. The Roseland is the quietest option of all, with coastal walks from the door and no through traffic.

Can I find last-minute holiday cottages in Cornwall?

Yes — last-minute availability updates daily, particularly for midweek breaks and shorter three-night stays. The A30 is noticeably quieter on midweek days, which is worth factoring in if you're flexible.

How do I get to Cornwall from London?

GWR runs direct trains from London Paddington to Penzance — journey time is roughly 4h30 to 5h30 depending on the service. Stops include Bodmin Parkway, Truro, St Austell, and St Erth (change there for the St Ives branch line). By road the A30 is the main route west from Exeter; summer Saturdays are notoriously slow around Bodmin. Cornwall Airport Newquay has flights from Manchester, Leeds Bradford, Belfast, and several other UK airports if you're coming from further north.
