Summary

The property is spacious and well-equipped, accommodating large groups comfortably. Guests appreciated the beautiful canal location and helpful owner. However, there were concerns about recent damp issues and limited toilet paper supplies. Frequent emails from the booking service were also noted as a downside. Overall, a positive experience.

The property

Tiverton 4.3 miles. Valley House, a grand, detached house, is situated on the banks of the canal in Halberton at the end of a no-through lane. With its private waterside setting, it is a fabulous place to relax and watch the world go by on the water and towpath. From the porch, head through to the oak-fitted kitchen with its little breakfast table for morning coffees, a well-equipped room for preparing family meals to enjoy in the dining room whilst you observe the canal life. For sitting comfortably, you have a choice of the sitting room with its glass door to slide open to the garden, or the conservatory with comfy seats. For anyone who doesn't want to tackle the stairs there is one ground-floor twin bedroom and a bathroom, or head upstairs to four more bedrooms with some lovely views of the canal and the Blackdown Hills. The children will love the games room which doubles as an optional bedroom for alternative sleeping. The garden is private with lawns, a terrace, a summer house, and a gate to a charming seating area with picnic benches beside the towpath. Needless to say, a barge trip on the Grand Western Canal is a must, or why not bring your own boats to launch at Sampford Peverell and moor them outside the house? You can fish outside with a licence and golf and boat, canoe and bicycle hire are available locally. North and South coasts make easy day trips or explore Exmoor and Somerset from this central location. For those eager to explore, the charming town of Tiverton offers a variety of attractions to discover, starting with the historical Tiverton Castle and the fascinating Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life, where you can learn about the area's rich heritage. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Old Railway Line Walking and Cycle Path provides scenic routes for walking and cycling, while the stunning National Trust property of Knightshayes Court showcases beautiful gardens and parkland for a leisurely stroll. Thrill-seekers will love Diggerland Devon, where you can get behind the controls of real construction machinery for a unique experience. Just a short drive away, you’ll find Exeter, home to the impressive Exeter Cathedral and the fun-filled Clip n Climb Exeter, perfect for those looking for adventure and excitement. Nature lovers will adore nearby Exmoor National Park, featuring spectacular views from Dunkery Beacon and the picturesque Landacre Bridge, while families can enjoy a delightful afternoon meeting the friendly creatures at Alpacas of Hall Farm. Valley House is a great base for watching life float by or touring the area.
