Just ten miles away lies the historic city of Bath, a world heritage site, with its Roman Baths, spa, stunning Georgian buildings, parks, gardens, museums, theatres and restaurants. A short drive across the beautiful Mendip Hills will take you to the Bishop’s Palace and the uniquely scissor-vaulted cathedral in the city of Wells. Bradford-on-Avon (sometimes called ‘miniature Bath’) and the Kennet and Avon Canal are within easy reach as too are a number of National Trust and English Heritage properties, including Stonehenge, Stourhead House and Gardens, Lacock and Avebury. If you are looking for something closer to the cottage, there are heritage railways at Midsomer Norton, home of the Somerset & Dorset Heritage Railway Trust, and Cranmore, home of the East Mendip Railway, plus Radstock Museum, the nursery rhyme villages of Kilmersdon (Jack and Jill) and Mells (Little Jack Horner). Closer still, you can simply wallow in the tranquillity of Ammerdown.
