Summary

The cottage is described as charming, cosy, and well-equipped, ideal for exploring the North Yorkshire Moors. Guests appreciated its location, cleanliness, and amenities, though some found it small and noted issues with the mattress and limited outside space. Overall, it was an enjoyable stay with friendly locals.

The property

Tucked away in the idyllic village of Castleton in North Yorkshire, this traditional stone-built cottage is in a superb location within the North York Moors National Park. Michaelmass Cottage has easy access to amenities. It is an ideal dwelling for a couple who are looking for a peaceful getaway. Park on the road, directly outside the property. You can unload your bags and relax.

The sitting room, which has a dining area, is beamed with shutters at the windows. It is quaint and inviting, here you can look forward to a log burning stove and curling up on the sofa in front of your favourite film on the Smart TV. Rustle up tasty home-cooked meals in the well-equipped galley style kitchen, which includes an electric oven and hob, microwave, and a dishwasher for keeping your space tidy.

There are two beautifully presented bedrooms. The larger is a double with feature wall, fireplace, and chest of drawers. The second is a snug single bedroom, sitting quietly at the rear of the property.

There is a secluded area outside for you to sit and relax with a glass of wine. Across the road is the ‘old man’s park’ with benches in the sun and views up Danby Dale. You might have to share it with the sheep who love to graze there!

Exploring the village and surrounding area is a delight. You will discover a good selection of pubs and traditional inns to sample local ales and locally soured food. Treat yourself to a scrumptious pub lunch after a day’s walking. The Eskdale is a lovely restaurant, right next to the station, serving excellent food and wines. The Down Arms, directly around the corner, serves traditional pub food and has a great atmosphere.

Around the corner and up the High Street is a well-stocked Co-op where you can buy basic supplies, logs and sticks. There is a delightful tearoom on the High Street. The train station offers easy access to the surrounding villages and the old fishing town of Whitby.

If you enjoy hiking, Castleton is a perfect location, it being the start of The Esk Valley Walk. This is a fabulous long distance linear walk, which can be done in five stages, using the train or the car. All the details are in the cottage.

Nearby you will find Danby Lodge, The Moors National Park Centre, where you can pick up information on hundreds of local destinations. The staff are very helpful. There are a series of scenic walks from there. Just ask the helpful visitor centre staff and they will point you in the right direction. Their well-stocked gift shop is definitely worth a visit. Promising an unforgettable trip to North Yorkshire, choose Michaelmass Cottage.
