This quiet little village boasts spectacular views towards the Menai Straits, wonderfully central for a wide variety of days out. North Wales is renowned for its narrow gauge railways, including within easy reach, the Snowdon Mountain Railway, Llanberis Lake Railway, Ffestiniog Railway, and Welsh Highland Railway. The Welsh Highland Railway runs between Caernarfon and Porthmadog, and offers what must be one of the great railway journeys of the world. Slate quarrying was a huge industry in the 19th century, relics of which abound. Fron was a key player, and many of the track beds of the tramways around the village are now easily graded footpaths. At Inigo Jones and Llechwedd (Blaenau Ffestiniog), visitors may try their hand at working slate themselves. Castles are a prominent feature of the Welsh coastline, the nearest of which is in Caernarfon. In addition, there are the remains of Segontium-a Roman fort. Caernarfon was the location for the Investiture of the then Prince Charles as Prince of Wales in 1969, and ‘The Crown’ in 2019. Closer to Fron is the Pant Du vineyard at Pen y Groes, offering good wines and delightful cider. Further afield is the Tyddyn Mawr golf course at Llanrug, beaches at Dinas Dinlle, and Black Rock Sands at Morfa Bychan. There are salmon in the rivers, art galleries and craft centres, and helicopter rides from Caernarfon Airport. At Minfordd the Italianate village of Portmeirion nestles along the shore of the Dwryd, where the 'Prisoner' series featuring Patrick McGoohan as No. 6, was set. For younger visitors, there is a wide choice of exciting activities, including go-karting (Glasfryn go-carting), zip wire flying (Bethesda, and Llechwedd), and a range of activities at Greenwood Forest Park, Y Felinhelli. Something for all ages, and whatever the weather. Hungry? There are several Michelin-starred restaurants dotted around, supplemented by purveyors of traditional fish & chips, and Indian, Chinese, and Pizza takeaways. Beddgelert is the home of Glaslyn Ices, reputed to be the finest ice cream in the world. They also do excellent pizzas. At Beddgelert, learn about the brave hound Gelert, which died to save a child, and see the statue in its memory.
