The Long House was once the Greyhound Inn from which a ferry to Annan ran and is presumed to have been the template for Sir Walter Scott's Tavern in "Redgauntlet". It was by repute, the haunt of smugglers and Border reivers. The names of some of the dwellings take up this Scott connection, while others including Greenmantle, are associated with the author John Buchan. The two bedrooms and the sitting room with dining area windows look straight over the Solway Firth to Criffel Hills in Scotland. On warmer days, the breakwater on that side of the house, is a private area on which to sit right by the shingle shoreline.
