The property
The Porthole is an elegant semi-detached house just 150 yards from the centre of Newton Ferrers. Offering an excellent base for families or friends, this pet-friendly retreat features a welcoming woodburning stove, a balcony, and far-reaching views. With a south-facing aspect overlooking the river, it offers generous and comfortable accommodation—ideal for unwinding and enjoying the charm of this much-loved village. From the road, descend 18 steep steps (with a handrail) through a private gate and into the porch, where you can leave coats and boots. The kitchen is well-appointed and filled with natural light, featuring granite worktops and a small breakfast area—perfect for a morning pastry and the newspaper. The sitting room, decorated in calming tones with a polished wooden floor, invites you to relax beside the wood-burning stove. On fine days, open the French windows to access the sunny terrace. Also on this level is a bunk bedroom, ideal for children. Upstairs, reached via steep and narrow stairs, are two further bedrooms, each with a balcony that allows you to step outside and take in the sweeping riverside views. In addition to the balconies, there is a sheltered terrace adorned with wisteria—an excellent spot for outdoor meals or a quiet drink. A short stroll takes you into the village for essentials or a meal at one of the welcoming waterside inns. For those who enjoy walking, nearby National Trust woodland and the scenic South West Coast Path offer beautiful routes. For more energetic pursuits, there are opportunities for wakeboarding, paddleboarding, tennis, and horse riding. The nearby Cellars Beach and the beach at Mothecombe are both well worth a visit, showcasing the natural beauty of the South Devon coastline. And if you're in the mood for a livelier atmosphere, Plymouth is within easy reach, offering a rich maritime history, a variety of shops, restaurants, and attractions. The Porthole invites you to stay, drift, and explore — whether that means curling up by the fire, losing track of time on the terrace, or setting out on a new adventure each day. The Porthole is a delightful place to recharge and enjoy all that this part of Devon has to offer.
